Just doing their jobs? Not fit for purpose?
Twitter focused on Highways England approach and remit today.
The Arundel Bypass campaign have tweeted today that “Highways England claim they cannot take Parliament’s environment and climate emergency declaration into account, as they have no instruction from Department for Transport to do so.” Highways England are reported as saying it is “merely a delivery agency”.
Friends of the Earth have called for Highways England to be scrapped. Saying “It’s not fit for purpose. In a climate & ecological emergency, we need transport agency that promotes sustainable transport solutions Not one that is set up to think about roads and only roads”.
When we met Highways England it’s Ox-Cam project lead told us that it follow process, and when people challenge what it does, it “hides behind process”. Highways England also said that it doesn’t take into account anything that is not confirmed or planned. But this is a declaration from parliament that is not being taken into account, surely that’s enough to warrant attention?
A transport agency which could plan the best solution to a problem sounds sensible. We don’t need an Expressway to support the new East West Rail link! Definitely no joined up thinking here.

Our environment is a national asset which is critical for everyone’s health and well-being. We must not let it be destroyed.

The No Expressway Group has a group bank account to which the Chair, Secretary and Treasurer are signatories. The group will publish accounts on noexpressway.org each year which will be audited by an accountant from outside the NEG group.
If any funds are left at the end of the campaign, these will be donated equally between RSPB and BBOWT.
